reviews
Disc
of the week! It's not often that you'll find a compilation exciting
enough to have it qualify as "Disc of the Week" here
at Flex Your Head Online. Sure, there are some great comps out
there, but more often than not, they're filled entirely with previously
released material or recording session throwaways. Sadly, that
doesn't rate at all on the exciting
scale. The other end of the spectrum generally sees a compilation
full of bands that really aren't ready to record, with the quality
being highly reflective of that. Luckily, neither is the case
with This Is Our Time.
Perhaps one of the most exciting things about This Is Our Time
is the international-ness of the whole damn effort — two
bands from Portugal (Pointing Finger, Day of the Dead), one from
Spain (Cinder), one from Argentina (Reconcile), one from Brazil
(Odyssey), and the sole American contributor, On x Alert. Six
bands, contributing three songs each, with a few of the highlights
being Pointing Fingers' better than Better Than A Thousand's melodic
straightedge hardcore blast, Reconcile's almost eerie musical
similarities to Vancouver's Reserve 34, and On x Alert's raging
fast Infest-inspired thrash.
International hardcore is alive and well — and that's a
damn good thing - [Flex

Hey, I am
not complaining, but isn't this the second compilation in the
last few months that kicks off with POINTING FINGER? Three more
awesome songs that aren't done the justice they deserve due
to sub-par production. Hey, once you go to Menno Bakker you
should never come back. If you guys ever do an LP, make sure
you record it at Bunt Studios. NExt up you have CINDER, whobring
you three songs of politically charged LIFES HALT-influenced
hardcore. For some reason I like this better than the songs
on their split 10". After that we have RECONCILE from Argentina,
who I thought were OK until I went back and re-listened to their
song "The Drive", wich sounds like a long-lost SWIZ
song off their first 7". That moved them from "OK"
status to "fucking bad ass" status real quick. Take
a little early IGNITION and add some MISSING 23rd, and you end
up with my new favorite Argentinean band. Next up, we have three
tracks brought to us by DAY OF THE DEAD. The vocalist has the
whole hoarse, barking AMERICAN NIGHTMARE shouting thing going
on, wich tires quick for me. Still, this band does a really
good coverof BLACK FLAG's "Revenge", and musically
they are spot on-but I just can't get into the vocals. After
DAY OF THE DEAD we have ONxALERT from New York-blazing fast
hardcore with a strong youth crew influence-it reminds me of
the singer for CHAIN OF STRENGHT singing for STRAIGHT AHEAD.
Surprisingly, their lyrics are politically relevant and intelligent.
How come I haven't heard more about this band until now? ONXALERT
are definitelyunderrated. Finally we have ODYSSEY from Brazil,
which is my least favorite band on here. They have a very crunchy,
modern produced sound to them that is very popular right now.
Still, the songs are suberbly written and very fast, so I could
imagine other people picking this band as their favorite. All
of these bands are way above average.
Definitely recommended - [Maximum Rock'N Roll - January 2004

MY EYES et autres groupes youth crew revival. De très
bon morceaux, mais néanmoins moins bien enregistrés
que ceux du ep sur Commitment Rec. CINDER nous donne une bonne
claque d'énergie musclée et surtout rapide. Comme
!! Mélangeant un old school HC à touche plutot
DAY OF THE DEAD.hehehe "Portugal
HC is back again".et oui les heavy old school rockeur de
wallons.c'est à dire Still Holding On Rec. Achetez le
vous ou bien offrez le ? Vous ne serez pas déçu
par ces 6 groupes jouant 3 hit single chacun !!! [Heart
On Fire webzine]
Xavier SxHxO
of the Dead (Portugal), quelque part entre American Nightmare
[ThanxForNothing

Still Holding
On, a rather small Belgian old school label sent me this compilation
a week or 2 ago. Normally I'm more a metalkid so punk and old
school hardcore are not really my favorites. But I have to admit
this compilation is good, very good. It includes 6 international
old school bands who play 3 songs each. By the way: The 16 pages
booklet with lyrics, pictures and contact addresses of each
band is very cool. The bands are: Pointing Finger, Cinder, Reconcile,
Day Of The Dead, On X Alert, Oddysey. A must have for old school
fans all over the world! Also check our contest section for
a free copy of this compilation.
